Saudi Arabia is following European Union’s lead to standardize USB-C

Recently, USB-C standardization has been pushed by several countries. After the European Union established the USB-C standard, Saudi Arabia has also announced a new policy regarding electronic device charging, aiming for simplicity and better environmental impact. Starting from January 1, 2025, all electronic devices in Saudi Arabia must use USB-C charging cables.

This decision was made by the Saudi Standards, Metrology, and Quality Organization in collaboration with the Communications, Space, and Technology Commission. The goal is to enhance your experience in using electronic devices more conveniently.

By using the same type of connector, users can use a single cable for multiple devices, making it more practical. Additionally, sharing photos and files between devices becomes easier.

This step is expected to reduce expenses related to purchasing various types of connectors and cables, while also being environmentally friendly. The Saudi Arabian government estimates that implementing this standardization could save around SAR 170 million (approximately USD $45 million) annually, as users won’t need to buy new chargers continuously. Over 2.2 million new chargers could be reduced, which would undoubtedly have a positive environmental impact.

This policy will be implemented in two phases. The first phase, beginning on January 1, 2025, requires all smartphones to use USB-C connectors. The second phase, starting on April 1, 2026, will extend the same rule to laptops and portable computers.

As a result, iPhone users will no longer need to worry about borrowing chargers from their friends who use Android devices.
